Bike To School Next Wednesday, May 8

Swansfield students are invited to ride their bikes to school next Wednesday as we celebrate national Bike to School Day.  Bicycles will be secured from 8:45 am until student dismissal at 3:10 pm.  Students arriving late or leaving early that day will not be able to participate since staff won't be available to assist with the bicycles during the school day. Students should plan to bring their bicycles to the front of the school by the flagpole near the bridge.  Mr. Berry will meet students there.

Families of 5th Grade Students, You're Invited...

Harper's Choice Middle School invites the incoming 6th graders to our Night of Excellence.  This event will showcase music ensembles, a selection from this year's musical The Little Mermaid Jr, a cultural fashion show, and presentations by the G/T Instructional Seminar participants. Come check out what you can get involved in next year as a 6th grader at Harper's Choice Middle.  Join us May 16th from 6:30 - 8:15pm and preview all that middle school has to offer. We look forward to seeing you.

Title I Survey - Feedback Needed!

Swansfield is a schoolwide Title I school and as such parent involvement is critically important. Our school staff and HCPSS value your input and partnership in supporting the academic success of your child.  Please take a few minutes to complete this survey regarding school improvement, climate, and family engagement. This will be used to evaluate our Title I program so that we can better serve you.  Your responses will be kept strictly confidential. Please complete the online survey by Friday, May 24, 2019.

If you are expecting or have a baby or young child through age 3, please join us for Talk With Me on Monday, May 6, at 6:30pm. At this workshop parents and caregivers will learn about how babies learn through simple interactions, and what you can do to help your baby’s development. All who attend can bring home free, gently-used board books. Snacks and babysitting for older siblings will be provided by Swansfield PTA. Seasonal Allergies Affect Students

Seasonal allergies can affect anyone at any time.  Health Room staff hears frequently, "I have not been diagnosed with allergies" or "I have never had allergies before".  Seasonal allergies are something to consider if cold-like symptoms are not resolving.

Students may not stay inside for PE or recess unless the health room has a doctor's note with information about pollen count restrictions and duration of the restriction. If you have questions or concerns, please call the school health room.

Visit Our School's Native Plant Garden

Last fall, Rebecca Seering, 5th grade teacher, was awarded a $750 grant from the Howard County Conservancy to use for a biodiversity project at Swansfield. She asked the Green Beanz to help her organize this project.  The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students in Green Beanz decided to make a native plant garden to replace the one that was lost during construction.  They researched plants, chose hearty, drought resistant varieties, and contacted HCPSS ground crews to prepare the planting area on the side of the school building between 4th and 5th grades. After measuring, mapping out plant placement, and building garden beds, the Green Beanz planted the flowers last week.  The grant, in conjunction with proceeds from the yard sales, funded the purchase of flowers and vegetables that will fill the native garden in the future.  Please stop by and visit the garden.  Thanks for your support!
