Dear Swansfield Families,
Thank you to everyone that came out to Fall Fest this past weekend! It was a HUGE success, and it was great to see so many Swansfield families. We estimate that about 400 kids, plus adults, went through the Trunk-or-Treat, which likely makes it the most attended PTA event in Swansfield history! A special thank you to everyone that volunteered and to all the teachers, staff, and administration that came out to support the event.
As we move into November, I highly encourage you to pay attention to the redistricting proposals from the Howard County Board of Education. Four of the six different proposals will lead to overcrowding at Swansfield. Please read the information below and I hope you will join our redistricting meeting Monday night to learn more about what you can do to help.
Also, I hope you will join us at our PTA Game Night on November 5th. Everyone is welcome!
Wishing you a wonderful weekend!
Judy Solomon
PTA President
NEW INFORMATION
PTA Game Night
Join us on Wednesday, November 5th from 7:30-8:30pm for an evening of fun and friendly competition! Everyone’s welcome — bring your family, friends, and your game face! We’ll have lots of games, tasty snacks, and tons of laughs.
Redistricting
How Redistricting Proposals Could Affect Swansfield
The Howard County Board of Education (BOE) is currently reviewing redistricting proposals that impact Swansfield. Though originally designed to reduce overcrowding at Bryant Woods and Centennial Lane Elementary Schools, in all of the concepts proposed at and since the Oct. 23 (BOE) meeting, Swansfield would receive dozens of additional students. In 4 of the 6 concepts currently on the table, this is projected to lead to overcrowding at Swansfield. One of the concepts adds over 100 students!
What We Can Do
The PTA wants to make sure every Swansfield family understands what’s being proposed and has a chance to share feedback before the BOE makes a final decisions. We need your voice!! Please, please consider signing up to testify next Thursday evening, Nov. 6th, and/or submitting written testimony to the BOE. Every Swansfield voice really does matter and will show the power of our community.
We have put together a community Toolkit with background, testimony tips, talking points, and a sample written letter.

Join the PTA and Lisa Hanson, a Swansfield parent who has been closely tracking the redistricting process, to:
- Walk through the different redistricting concepts currently being considered
- Get community feedback
- Understand our recommendations for BOE advocacy
- Ask questions and get tips on giving testimony. Most of us are completely new to this - we are in this together!
Sign up to Speak Up
We need Swansfield families to share feedback directly with the Board of Education at the November 6 7pm hearing. To testify:
- Sign up in advance to secure your speaking slot
- Leverage PTA provided taking points (or prepare brief remarks) about how the proposed changes would impact Swansfield students and/or your family. See our toolkit HERE
- If you can’t attend, consider submitting written testimony. Instructions for this are in the toolkit
- Remember to wear your Swansfield t-shirt, if you have one!
