Spelling Bee
Swansfield Elementary had once again been invited to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee sponsored by the Howard County Library and Howard County Public School System. Students from 4th and 5th grade will participate in a “first-round spelling bee” in their respective teams the week of January 8th. The top 8 spellers from each team will then compete in a school-level spelling bee on February 1, 2024. From this final round, one school-wide winner will be determined. This winner will advance to the Howard County Library Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 15, 2024 at Hammond High School. The second place winner at the school level will serve as an alternate should the winning student not be able to participate.
Attached is a list of words students should use to prepare themselves for both the team and school-level spelling bees. Students should first study their grade level list of words. When they have mastered these 50 study words, they can further prepare for the spelling competitions by learning the study words of the other grade levels. Words not on this list may also be used during both the team and school-level bees.
Participating in the spelling bee is voluntary. Please complete this form if your student would like to participate in the team spelling bees the week of January 8, 2024. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at tara_diventi@hcpss.org or laine_malcotti@hcpss.org. Good luck, and happy s-p-e-l-l-i-n-g!

GREEN BEANZ ENVIRONMENTAL TEAM HELP
The Green Beanz Environmental Team is collecting plastic to win a bench from Trex! Students are helping to weigh the plastic each week, but Mrs. DiVenti and Ms. Malcotti could use help bringing the plastic to drop-off bins at a supermarket (ex. Giant, Harris Teeter).
Please use the sign-up sheet: Swansfield Plastic Recycling Pick-up to help with their efforts! From there, all you need to do is park in the front and come into the vestibule. Bags will be waiting to be picked up there. Thank you in advance for helping the Green Beanz!
JOIN THE SES FUN RUN COMMITTEE
The SES P.E. team and the PTA are launching a first-time fun run to help raise funds to purchase new P.E. equipment for the school. The fun run will be held on school property and the course will be approximately 1 mile long. The event date will be announced soon (Spring 2024). Interested in helping plan this fun event for students and families? Please contact recording@swansfieldpta.org to learn more.
